5th EAP Fighting with a staff

Staff fighting from cassie ward on Vimeo.
This animation was done with thumbnails instead of live action reference.
I mostly use life action reference so this was different, but as still as fun and challenging.

Animation Quotes

James Baxter "actors do while animators describe".

Eric Larson (on animating the character through emotions)
If it’s not sincere, the audience won’t believe it

Richard Williams
Someone once asked Milt Kahl: 'How did you plan out the counteraction you used on that character?'

Milt blew up 'That's the wrong way to look at it! Don't think of it like that! Just concentrate on giving the performance - that's what's important! The play's the thing. You'll get all tangled up if you think of it in a technical way!'

Keith Lango
Here's to the joy of learning and growing as an animator. Always be brutal, always hear what others have to say (with no prideful stiff-necked rejection of it), always tear your stuff apart, always adapt and grow.

Brad Bird
Animation is about creating the illusion of life. And you can't create it if you don't have one.

DJ Nicke
Are there any DO's and DONT's that newbies should be aware of?
DON'T Listen to music when you animate!
DON'T Offset your keys! Use breakdowns instead
DO Take regular breaks
DO Draw! I don't care if you're no good at drawing, just trying to draw a person forces you to really observe them, so get to it!
(and)
Are there any must have's that all animators should have (Animator's Survival Kit, Illusion of Life, Wall-e, blogs, websites) and/or study?
You must have a curiosity for things. How does it move? What were they thinking? Why does your cat lift its leg when it licks itself? You can't learn animation from any book, the books just guide your curiosity. If you didn't have that curiosity, then you probably wouldn't have any of those books (or wouldn't read them anyway), and you probably wouldn't have read this...

Grim Natwick
"Animation, it's all in the timing and the spacing."

Glen Keane
"Animation alone may move drawings, but it will not move an audience."

John K
"Frank and Ollie explain the ingredients of drawing life very well. Line of action gives a character's body a direction, exaggeration nails the point of the attitude, clear silhouettes make the pose read, expressions define the character and his emotion".

Bill Plympton
"Ambition is a large part of someone's success; if you have no ambition you probably won't succeed."
